Evidence Preservation Lifecycle

Seven control points from source freeze to disposition, with distinct guards, owners, artifacts and exceptions.

VI–EN terminology

Seven lifecycle control points

Each point has distinct authority, guards and artifacts. Verification, holds and permission changes can recur; this is not a one-pass linear pipeline.

01 · Freeze source

ViewContent
OwnerRecord owner
GuardBytes/revision, members, custody and rights
ArtifactSource inventory; no LTANS evidence yet
ExceptionMissing data/rights: resolve before submission
Archive Service

02 · Deposit

ViewContent
OwnerArchive Service
GuardAuthentication, profile, digest and idempotency
ArtifactarchiveId/jobId receipt; not EVIDENCE_READY
ExceptionHTTP disconnect: reconcile original transaction
Archive API

03 · Generate evidence

ViewContent
OwnerEvidence + Trust
GuardPinned input and approved TSA
ArtifactStored/validated revision or explicit failure
ExceptionTSA/storage failure never becomes success
Evidence Service

04 · Maintain

ViewContent
OwnerRenewal + Policy
GuardMonitor risk, retention and reread rights
ArtifactSchedule/decision and continuation revision
ExceptionHASH_TREE without bytes blocks
Renewal & Crypto-Agility

05 · Use and verify

ViewContent
OwnerRecord owner / verifier
GuardAccess rights and evaluation context
ArtifactStep report and scoped export
ExceptionSUCCEEDED does not imply VALID
Verification Service

06 · Transfer

ViewContent
OwnerSender + recipient
GuardPackage, manifest, tools and acknowledgement
ArtifactRecorded responsibility-transfer point
ExceptionExport completion is not recipient acceptance
Export & Transfer

07 · Disposition

ViewContent
OwnerData owner + approver
GuardRetention, every hold, storage locks and backups
ArtifactPer-target outcome and retained residuals
ExceptionExpiry never auto-deletes; partial failures retain checkpoints
Controlled Disposition

Cross-cutting controls

Four distinct time concepts

TimeInterpretation
Business dateSource-declared issue/transaction date; retain provenance and authority.
Receipt timeService records receipt; evidence generation may still be pending.
genTimeTime in a verified TSA token; check digest binding and source.
evaluatedAtReport evaluation time; read with policy, evidenceVersion and trust context.

An old source date does not create historical evidence. Retain the source date/provenance; receipt or a new token cannot establish historical attestation.

01

Intake

Finalize bytes/profile/custody; receipt differs from evidence readiness.

Archive Service
02

Generate evidence

Check digest/token/syntax, persist revision, then emit EvidenceGenerated.

Evidence Service
05

Export and transfer

Recipient checks package/scope; acknowledgement does not delete source.

Export & Transfer

TIMESTAMP

Prior evidence and suitable hash conditions; extend timestamp protection under the profile.

OR

HASH_TREE

Needs originals, prior evidence and read/decrypt access; new digest/tree and timestamp.

The modes are conditional alternatives, not a mandatory sequence. Missing prerequisites stop/reconcile work; do not switch modes to hide failure.
